Creating innovative materials from upcycled seashells for more sustainable architecture

Our Origins

While certain resources are becoming scarce, the sea continues to generate resources we overlook.

That’s what Tanguy, Théo, Maxime, and Camille discovered in 2020 in Riec-sur-Bélon, in southern Finistère, while working alongside Breton oyster farmers. Oyster and scallop shells, although abundant, are not recycled: without a dedicated recovery channel, they end up buried in landfill. They decided to tackle the issue at its source: transforming these overlooked volumes into a recycled, low-carbon material, entirely produced in France. A way of reversing the usual production logic, revealing rather than extracting.

Our Commitments

Our commitment is simple: to offer a material that fits within a virtuous cycle, and to prove that sustainability, performance, and aesthetic excellence can coexist without compromise.

The factory

An industrial tool serving the circular economy.
Located in Thorigné-Fouillard, near Rennes, our 5,600 m² factory embodies Ostrea’s vision: turning the circular economy into an industrial reality.

Our founders

Behind Ostrea are four passionate founders with complementary talents, united by the desire to transform materials differently.

  • At the origin of Ostrea’s founding idea, Tanguy identified the potential of valorizing shell waste during a stay with his brother, an oyster farmer. From procurement to business development in luxury hospitality and tourism, he built a strong culture of hands-on experience and discipline. His mission: to structure Ostrea’s industrial ambition on solid, sustainable financial foundations.

  • Trained at the École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne in Rennes, Théo follows a single guiding thread: make, test, repeat. Ancien Fabmanager à l’EESAB, il a le réflexe du prototype et le sens de la matière. Former Fab Manager at the École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne, he has a prototyping mindset and an instinctive understanding of materials. At the crossroads of art and engineering, he imagines and develops new materials.

  • Maxime brings the material into the spotlight: he leads business development and builds the key partnerships that turn innovation into concrete projects. After several years at Google and Pinterest, he brings to Ostrea a pragmatic approach, blending strategy, content, and media to firmly anchor the company in the market over the long term.

  • Camille carries both the vision and the execution of Ostrea. Trained at the London School of Economics, he sharpened his ability to drive demanding projects to success at Google. At Ostrea, he sets the pace, rallies the ecosystem around the project, and turns ambition into a tangible circular industrial venture.
